Using a laser alignment tool
If you prefer a professionally manufactured enlarger alignment unit to the
home-made variant, we recommend you look at Versalab's "Parallel"
alignment system. It can be purchased for the price of a good enlarger
lens.
It is advisable to start the laser alignment process with a previously levelled
table and a vertically aligned column. Turn on the laser, taking care never
to point it at anyone's eyes, and adjust the negative holder and lens in the
following order, while judging the results according to the instructions in
fig.6.
1) Lift the enlarger head to the top of the column and lock it as you would
in normal operation. Remove the enlarger lens and place the laser
alignment tool directly under the opening that has just been released.
Adjust the negative holder plate.
2) Replace the enlarging lens and, using a filter mounted on its lens ring or
a piece of glass simply held against its front surface, adjust the lens plate
until the laser beam reflects back on itself, indicating that it is parallel to
the table.
Personally, I proceed differently, with adjustments in
a different order:
1°/ Using a metric level, I first adjust my film holder and then my lens
holder, whereas Lambrecht already adjusts the table.
2°/ Then, with the Versalab, I adjust the plate; generally, if the film holder
and lens holder have been correctly adjusted, there is little or no difference
between the settings.
